One of 22 locations around the world, Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia serves patients from around the globe with orthopaedic and spinal pathologies. Education is supplemented by a robust daily conference schedule. While on rotation, residents spend time in the emergency room, clinic, and operating room, learning about the diagnosis, decision making, treatment, and aftercare of the span of pediatric orthopedic problems. Jefferson PGY-3s spend 14 weeks at Nemours alongside residents from several other programs. In addition, it is the only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in the state of Delaware. The 15 fellowship-trained surgical faculty cover the span of pediatric orthopedics, with subspecialists in pediatric orthopaedic oncology, spine surgery, hand surgery, lower extremity surgery, and sports surgery. Founded in 1940, the hospital has 208 beds and serves as the pediatric affiliate hospital for Thomas Jefferson University. The Nemours Children's Hospital, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a fully accredited, nonprofit, teaching facility operated by the Nemours Foundation. Residents complete a PGY-5 trauma rotation here. Located in northeast Philadelphia, Torresdale has 450 licensed acute care beds and is a busy Level 2 Trauma Center. Residents spend time here as PGY-3s and PGY-5s on Shoulder and Elbow, and PGY-4s on Hand Surgery with the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center. Located in south Philadelphia, Methodist has 204 licensed acute care beds and is home to the Jefferson Shoulder and Elbow Center. Orthopaedic attendings at Jefferson are comprised of the physicians of Rothman Orthopaedics and the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the core hospital of the Jefferson orthopaedic residency. It is one of the few hospitals in the United States that is recognized as both a regional Level 1 Trauma Center and as a federally recognized regional Spinal Cord Injury Center. The university hospital is nationally ranked for a number of specialties, including orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology, cancer, and GI, among others.
